Mégane Gimbret on the wallpaper study site of a castle

Historic wallpapers, in place or removed: a fragile and often forgotten heritage.

  • Historic wallpapers in place
  • Removed lengths and fragments
  • Samples and rolls

The first cases in this category will be online soon. Do you have an object like this? Send photos: I will tell you what is possible.

Wallpapers tell the history of a house: several decors are often layered on the same wall. It is a fragile and often forgotten heritage.

My experience

In 2021 I took part, with KIK-IRPA, in a study of the historic wallpapers of a 17th-century castle at Haltinne: uncovering, stratigraphy, documentation. Reading the successive layers makes it possible to recover the original decors before any decision.

Their weaknesses

  • Lifting and detachment, when the original adhesive fails.
  • Stains and tide lines from damp walls.
  • Tears and losses, colours fading or flaking.

For a wallpaper still in place or removed fragments, the first step is always to study and document what exists. Send me photos: I will tell you what is possible.
