Books and bindings

Spines of worn old bindings

Old books, family books, registers: the text block, the sewing and the binding.

  • Old books and family books
  • Bindings in leather, cloth or parchment
  • Registers and notebooks
  • Albums

The first cases in this category will be online soon. Do you have an object like this? Send photos: I will tell you what is possible.

A book is a complex object: leaves, sewing, boards, a covering. Each element can be damaged, and each affects the others.

What I see most often

  • A binding coming apart, broken headcaps and joints.
  • Loose sections, torn or detached pages.
  • Crumbling leather, worn corners.
  • Stains, damp, old repairs with adhesive tape.

My experience

At the Bibliothèque nationale de France I was a restorer-binder: maintenance, consolidation and restoration of paper and books, reconstruction of damaged or missing parts, making replacement bindings in parchment.

Depending on the book and its use, I consolidate what exists, repair the pages, or suggest a custom conservation box to protect it.
