After

The object

A theatre poster for Michel de Ghelderode’s La Grande Kermesse. It names Maurice Jacquemont and René Dupuy, and reads “Champs-Élysées”.

Condition

The surface was soiled. Old adhesive tape, once applied to hold a tear, had yellowed and covered part of the lettering.

Treatment

  • Dry cleaning of the whole surface, with an eraser and a sponge.
  • Tape removal: the tape’s carrier is lifted with a scalpel, without pulling on the paper, then the remaining adhesive is removed.

Result

The “after” detail shows the area freed from the tape: the letters are readable again, and the adhesive will no longer stain the poster.
