Brown line drawing on paper

A drawing crossed by a tear

A tear ran right across the sheet, through both faces. Realigned fibre by fibre and reinforced on the back, it has disappeared.

Brown line drawing of two men, crossed horizontally by a white tear
Before
The same drawing after the tear was repaired, with the line continuous again
After

The object

A brown line drawing: two men side by side, drawn with a quick, sure hand.

Condition

A tear ran right across the sheet at the level of the faces. Its edges had drifted slightly apart, showing the white of the paper.

Treatment

A tear repair: the edges realigned, then reinforced on the back with a thin strip of Japanese paper and starch paste, and a discreet retouch of the break line.

Result

The line is continuous again and the sheet can be handled safely. On the back, the repair stays visible and reversible.
